Going to close as done for now, and will open a specific issue on implementing alternative (JSON) serialization support.
For now, using longs in Java (and long longs in C++) appears to be viable to guarantee we can handle 64-bit epochs to capture time.

Pretty good first cut is done, have not yet tested cross-language interop. Next step will be to document the wire format somewhere.

The "nextgen" work on the SP is predicated on possibly implementing the remoting layer used with shibd in Java.
It's not obvious yet whether the actual DDF API has to be supported or if it makes more sense to just expose native Java collection APIs.
